This is a new strategy how to do the React 19 upgrade after the previous attempt from #61521 was reverted in #78940.

when building React vendor scripts, build two versions: the original React 18, and new React 19 with a set of polyfills. The build/scripts/vendors directory contains both versions.
add and experiment flag (gutenberg-react-19) that enables registering the v19 versions of the scripts as react, react-dom and react-jsx-runtime.
now even though the Gutenberg scripts are still built with React 18, at runtime it loads React 19. This very well simulates real-world published plugins.

TODOs:

Compatibility for rendering portals into <body>, which behaves very differently in v18 and v19
Compatibility for inert attributes (boolean vs string value)
Compatibiity for defaultProps on functional components
Compatibility for elements produced by bundled v18 JSX runtime (Symbol.for('react.element'))
Create a testing plugin that simulates typical legacy patterns and test the plugin as part of the e2e suite
Run e2e and performance tests in both v18 and v19 regimes
Declare both v18 and v19 as valid peer dependencies for bundled packages

Also, I don't think Syncpack will like this difference in the React version. We may need to add an exception for this directory.

The goal is to pin React to a specific version, so that upgrades are completely controlled. We don't want to do minor upgrades by accident, during a random lockfile update.

Are we still pinning React 18 to a specific version? Currently my local repo has 18.3.1. What happens when 18.3.2 is released? Will an accidental npm install upgrade it?

Caret (^) ranges only do patch updates by default.

No, that drift to the latest patch happens only if the lockfile is completely regenerated. The caret range matters for consumers of our packages. If we pin the version in dependencies, then they won't receive security updates for those dependencies.

OK, if we now rely on the lockfile stability, I converted the versions to carets. Syncpack still complains that there are two different versions in the repo, we'll have to add an exception.

I fear the experimental flag approach may prolong the upgrade for an indefinite time. Especially considering that experiments haven't historically been the best way to push forward features and haven't encouraged active testing and participation by the community.

I also believe this is not solving the backward compatibility problems; it only delays/sidetracks them. Whenever we opt for including React 19 in core, we'll hit the same problems.

Can you elaborate on why we chose to go this way?

I think we need a way to tell plugin authors, enable this plugin or this experiment to discover how your plugin fails in React 19 and fix these issues today.

Doing this with the Gutenberg plugin without experiment feels premature as shown in the previous attempt. Big plugins are still failing. With the experiment, we can go to these plugin authors and make the ask.

That said, I think it should be bound in time from the start ideally. Like do this for two plugin releases, accompanied with a strong plugin testing and outreach from everyone involved.

@tyxla The endgame is that Gutenberg ships React 19 by default, with a compat layer that lets plugins built with React 18 run without errors. And that this happens fairly soon, after a few testing rounds with major plugins.

The experimental flag is a short term solution that gives everyone two options:

run a stable Gutenberg plugin that can be safely installed on production sites, or even automatically and widely deployed by hosts to a large number of sites at once.
run a beta Gutenberg plugin for development purposes.

Can you elaborate on why we chose to go this way?

I'm curious what other ways do you have in mind. What are the alternatives that this approach is being evaluated against?

If we ship React 19 by default right away: that's what the first attempt did. Basically every major plugin starts failing immediately, the published Gutenberg plugin is usable only as an alpha developer preview.

If we ship React 19 with the compat shims that we have today: the failure won't be so immediate, but we're still shipping a foundantional upgrade that has been only superficially tested. There will be problems, and we'll be forced to revert again.

So, let's release a version of Gutenberg that can do both v18 and v19. Test compatibility in a way where you are always just one checkbox click away from opting out completely.

This sounds reasonable, thanks @jsnajdr @youknowriad. I can see how releasing a Gutenberg version with both versions will be a good way to get the necessary feedback.

Let's make sure the experiment is indeed short-lived, and that we address backward compatibility issues while working with the plugin authors to migrate. We surely don't want the experiment to live for ages.

My concern with the experimental flag was that we might miss the window for 7.1, since a major part of the exposure to plugin authors is the WP 7.1 beta. But worst case scenario, we can postpone the upgrade for 7.2. I still think landing it early in the cycle will be ideal for ensuring major plugins migrate.

I think this is a good starting point to begin testing behind an experimental flag 👍

I verified that with the default plugin experience, React.version and ReactDOM.version outputs 18 versions. I also loaded the editor with Elementor and WooCommerce enabled and observed no errors. I repeated this with "React 19" experiment enabled and verified the updated version. Worth noting that there was an error in an Elementor script with React 19, but it didn't block the editor from loading. We may want to follow-up to see what's being used there, it seems to stem from something with the JSX runtime (screenshot).

I admit that I don't completely follow everything happening in the codemod and why and whether it's exhaustive enough to account for every scenario, but can appreciate that this comes with the territory of patching compatibility of vendor scripts the way we're trying to do, and that the intent over the coming weeks will be to refine this patching.

Should we make everyone build the -orig file, or is that more valuable for our own internal testing? Especially thinking since we're writing 2x2x2=8 files here (react/react-dom, min.js/.js, default/-orig). I'm also a bit hesitant about the performance of this patching in general and how it's going to be part of everyone's build, but some of that might only be needed for the test period at least.

Presumably the patching will stick around though, which also has me questioning the use of Babel-based parsing and traversal. Maybe a bit slow? Could we store the patches in source control? At least for the unminified copy and then run our own minifier.

The mixed use of .js and .ts in this package and absence of TSConfig to actually enforce TypeScript syntax is a bit unexpected, but I gather that it helps keep the diff simpler to move the react-polyfill file as-is.

The codemod handles all situations where the $$typeof field and its REACT_ELEMENT_TYPE and REACT_LEGACY_ELEMENT_TYPE values are involved:

in the react script the REACT_LEGACY_ELEMENT_TYPE is not even defined, because it's not used and has been eliminated by a bundler. We're adding the definition back.
there are case REACT_ELEMENT_TYPE: statements, we're adding also case REACT_LEGACY_ELEMENT_TYPE: right next to it.
there are foo.$$typeof === REACT_ELEMENT_TYPE comparisons, these are converted to (foo.$$typeof === A || foo.$$typeof === B).
there are assignments like foo.$$typeof = REACT_ELEMENT_TYPE, we detect them, but keep them unchanged.
all other usages of REACT_ELEMENT_TYPE are unexpected and the codemod throws an error.

The net effect of this is that the patched React supports also the REACT_LEGACY_ELEMENT_TYPE objects.

Presumably the patching will stick around though, which also has me questioning the use of Babel-based parsing and traversal. Maybe a bit slow?

It can be rewritten from Babel to something else, some Go or Rust based modern tool.

Could we store the patches in source control?

Yes, we could run the codemod only on upgrade and commit the results. The tool is there mainly to reliably generate the patch.

The only purpose of the -orig file is that we have two files to diff, original and patched. To verify that the codemod works as expected. We can stop generating it once this process becomes stable.

@aduth the screenshot link doesn't work, but with Elementor I see this:

It happens on the /wp-admin/admin.php?page=elementor-app#onboarding page. Probably an Elementor bug we can't work around. There is a useMemo that calls a function that you can ever only call once:

useMemo( () => registerOnboardingSlice(), [] );

But when such a component renders inside <Suspense> and the tree throws, the useMemo result is forgotten and on the next render it will be calculated again. I'm trying now to figure out what is the exact difference between React 18 and 19 here.
