Replaces the Media Editor crop zoom RangeControl (with percentage readout) with a dedicated +/- button pair, shown in the Crop panel on wide viewports and moved into the footer toolbar on narrow viewports.
Changes:
- Introduces a new
MediaEditorZoomControlscomponent (buttons + styling) and wires it into both the Crop panel (wide) and footer toolbar (narrow). - Removes the old zoom slider UI and related styling/test coverage from the crop panel.

The code change looks good to me, my feedback here is mostly pondering about the UX:
Visually, I much prefer the look of the + / - buttons, both on desktop and mobile layouts. It feels much cleaner and less confusing.
The main issue I ran into while testing is in how the step change of zooming feels when you click on it. If you're very zoomed out, then the step of clicking + feels like quite a jump. Conversely if you're really zoomed in, clicking - feels like it does barely anything.
Now that we're hiding the actual value being used, I'm wondering if it'd be worth changing the step to be multiplicative instead of linear/additive? That way, to a user, the zoom step would (perceptually) feel visually the same level of zooming in and out irrespective of how zoomed they already are.
I played around a tiny bit with Claude to try to compare the number of clicks to go from zoomed out to zoomed in. I've copy and pasted the following from my LLM tool, so apologies if the calculations are off!

Does that make sense? I feel like I might have been staring at this too long 😄
The only other thing I noticed is the spacing between the tools — I wasn't sure how much gap we want between the zoom controls and the others on mobile. It might become clearer once that aspect ratio control PR lands and we can see them all together in a row:

I had stashed a commit to play around with that, it also added animation, which we can take or leave (extra code). I'll revive it. I like what you've laid out in the table. I think you're right. Thanks again for testing this! |

Here's the issue: Kapture.2026-06-05.at.13.31.03.mp4At 600–782px, with the sidebar closed, the tools are hidden. We're obliged to play nicely with the way the interface skeleton's breakpoints are set. 😄 It makes me think the footer controls could be there 100% of the time now that they're mostly buttons. This would remove the need (for now) for the crop panel, until manual or other advanced/a11y controls are settled https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/pull/78187\ The alternative is to hide the footer when the sidebar is open at 600–782px and reveal it with the sidebar is closed. It's more complex and possibly fragile as it's tightly coupled to the interface skeleton. |

Thinking about this more, I'd avoid this. I'll get a POC up so we can play around. The current crop panel is the transitional thing to keep in mind, especially if it "reappears" and is replaced with advanced controls. |

Good questions. I think we're likely to always need a crop panel of some kind, as there'll be more controls to add further down the track. Not just advanced / custom value entry, but eventually being able to scale the image, too as that's part of the core editor screen: 
So personally I'd stick with the Crop panel for now, but also so that we don't try to change too many things at once. |

Yeah, and we know that some users really like having labels for things, so I lean a bit toward using the extra screen real estate when we have it available. But all up for grabs for playing around with for sure. Thanks again for all the polishing this week, it's looking great! |

I think both edit and details panel should be smarter and not rely on an action to expand/collapse. For this flow, the right panel doesn't need to inherit the interaction that exists on the block editor (expand/collapse the inspector). Although they share similar DNA, the contexts are different. |

The sidebar width was pinned with `!important` from the small breakpoint up (added in #78931, reworked in #78928) to beat ComplementaryArea's inline width. From 782px up that also clobbered the inline width that ComplementaryAreaFill animates, so the 300ms open/close tween ran with no visible motion: the panel sat mounted for the tween's duration, then popped in or out. The overflow #78931 fixed only exists between 600px and 782px, where ComplementaryArea is in mobile mode and writes an inline `100vw`. From 782px up, InterfaceSkeleton already gives the sidebar a relative, width:auto column and ComplementaryArea animates its width to the sidebar width, exactly like the main editor. Bound the width override to the 600-782px band so the desktop sidebar animates natively instead of being frozen. No @wordpress/interface changes.

Why
Follow-up to the crop modal layout (#78896) and the image-controls toolbar (#78935). The slider's
%value is unanchored and confusing — it's relative to an internal base-fit pose, not 1:1 pixels, and its floor shifts with rotation and crop. A +/− pair reads more clearly; pinch and wheel still handle large jumps.Keeping zoom in its own component left the mobile footer with mismatched gaps between tool groups (raised in review). Consolidating every control into
MediaEditorImageControlsmakes the footer a single toolbar with one consistent gap.Notes

ComplementaryArea's mobile mode is hard-coded to themediumbreakpoint, so the column-down-to-600 behaviour is achieved with scoped CSS overrides of its inline100vwwidth and position.Manual testing
