Nice one, thanks for getting this up! Seeing the removal of the old e2e tests made me wonder, would it be possible for us to add a happy-path e2e test for the new cropper? I think at the moment we've only got unit-like tests, but it'd be good to make sure we've got the overall flow covered (happy to lend a hand here!) Also just an FYI @fcoveram as we've collaborated a bunch on media-related things, and not sure if you've seen this modal yet 🙂 |

With the experiment in place, MediaEditorModalMount only mounted for the experiment. The preload tests caught that /wp/v2/types/attachment?context=edit was being requested every time via usePostFields.
The fix moves the mount inside a gated child component. The outer mount only renders the child when the store says the modal is actually open.
This means the schema fetch happens at first-open time, not at editor-startup time.

@andrewserong so something similar to the tests we've deleted here? Sounds like a good idea. Let's see how much bloat they add here. Maybe they'll catch a bug or two 😄 |

The modal becomes the default crop experience, replacing the inline cropper. This commit removes the registration on the Experiments screen and the PHP bridge that exposed window.__experimentalMediaEditorModal to the editor. Subsequent commits drop the JS gates and the inline cropper code.
With the experiment gone, drop the window.__experimentalMediaEditorModal checks in the editor provider. The modal mount and the openMediaEditorModal callback are now provided unconditionally, so consumers (block library) can always rely on them. Consumer-side simplifications follow in subsequent commits.
Previously MediaEditorModalMount unconditionally called
usePostFields({ postType: 'attachment' }) on every editor render,
which kicked off a GET /wp/v2/types/attachment?context=edit request
during editor startup. That was harmless while the mount was
experiment-gated, but now that the modal is always mounted it shows
up as a new request on every page load and breaks the preload
contract tests.
Gate the inner component (and its usePostFields/useSettings reads)
behind the store's isOpen selector. The fields and settings are
only needed when the modal actually renders, so fetching them on
first open is the right time. They get cached afterwards, so
subsequent opens are instant.
The three Image block tests covering zoom, aspect ratio, and rotation drove the inline cropper's toolbar UI (clickBlockToolbarButton 'Zoom' / 'Aspect Ratio' / 'Rotate' / 'Apply'). With the modal as the default crop experience, clicking the Crop toolbar button now opens the modal — those buttons no longer exist on the block toolbar, so the tests can't pass and the UI they assert is gone from this code path. Equivalent modal coverage is a coverage gap to address separately, but keeping the failing legacy tests in tree just to document the gap is worse than removing them. Also removes the associated chromium snapshot PNGs that have no remaining test referencing them.
Covers the round trip the deleted inline-cropper tests used to exercise: insert image block, upload, open the modal from the block toolbar, rotate, save, modal closes, block image updates. Assertions are deliberately property-based (modal visibility, src changed) rather than pixel-snapshot — the modal's edit pipeline produces different bytes from the inline cropper for the same input, and a pixel snapshot would be too brittle as the modal evolves. Other crop operations (zoom, aspect ratio, drag-crop) remain a coverage gap to address separately.

Francisco is AFK I think this week, and while he is definitely an expert I'll defer to on anything related to media, I do think this PR can probably land, give or take any input @jameskoster might have. But my motivation for this: the code exists, it's a solid experiment, I think it's worth opening up to broader feedback. In that sense, 👍 👍 I also left some feedback here: #73771 (comment) |

My feedback comes mostly from a design system perspective and can be addressed in follow-ups (or not at all if y'all disagree)... This looks great! A modal editing experience seems like a wonderful enhancement. My system-perspective concern is the use of header actions here. Cancel and Save feel more like completion actions, and placing them in the header diverges from the established Dialog convention where those actions typically live in the footer. I’m not sure what the keyboard button represents, but the panel toggle feels more like a workspace concern than dialog chrome. It may fit better within the editing surface itself. That would also translate more naturally if this experience ever needed to exist outside of a Dialog context (maybe accessed via the Media Library). OVerall my preference would be to keep dialog headers focused on dialog-level controls that apply regardless of the content (for example a hypothetical button to minimise/maximise dialog dimensions). That will give us a more predictable structure across all dialogs, and clearer separation between dialog controls, workspace tools, and completion actions. So with all that said I’d propose the following layout adjustments for consideration:

What?
Makes the Media Editor modal the default crop experience for image content in the editor. The modal has been opt-in behind the
gutenberg-media-editor-modalexperiment since #77480.This PR removes that experiment and always mounts the modal.
Note
This is deliberately the minimum change to flip the default. Consumer code in the Image and Site Logo blocks is not touched here, and the inline
__experimentalImageEditorcomponent remains in the tree as (now unreachable) code.A follow-up PR will do the cleanup. See the draft PR to get an idea of what's involved:
Why?
The modal-based cropper has stabilized. Keeping it behind an experiment means the default cropping experience that ships in Core is still the older inline cropper. Flipping the default now lets us collect feedback on the modal as the real, observed crop UX rather than something only opt-in users see.

How?
Three behaviour changes:
lib/experimental/experiments/load.php).window.__experimentalMediaEditorModal(lib/experimental/editor-settings.php).openMediaEditorModalblock-editor setting is always supplied (packages/editor/src/components/provider/).After these changes, the existing toolbar branches in the Image and Site Logo blocks (which check
openMediaEditorModal ? open : inline) always resolve to the modal because the callback is now always defined. No consumer-side code needs to change for this PR.Reverting this PR puts the modal back behind the experiment toggle with no other side effects.
