Support Wingpanel API

I've been hearing that elementary OS users are big fans of Redshift. It would be awesome if Redshift supported the new Wingpanel API so that it could display as an indicator in elementary OS.

Wingpanel uses Gtk.Popover instead of a plain menu so rich and interesting layouts using the full range of Gtk widgets are possible.

As an example of what a wingpanel indicator's code looks like, this is our session indicator

@matzipan, Redshift already has a status icon for the standard X way and for Ubuntus way. It is a feature that is important for users that don't know/like the command line. So yes, and adding it to elementary OS as a good idea. However if we don't get an abstraction layer for this thing, this getting out of hand if distros start adding their own standards.

GNOME is already trying to deprecate the use of indicators in their DE. I doubt Unity 8 will allow for this either.

Maybe Redshift should rethink its approach.

This feels like nonsense, what is the alternative? How would I for example see if I have unread e-mail or IM messages without a status icon?

I think this is beyond the scope of this issue. But, for example, in elementary OS we will look towards better use of notifications in those cases.

In the case of Redshift, however, apart from quick disabling/enabling of the application, I don't really see any use for an indicator. And I'd really love to see this done using Application Actions (not sure what the API terminology for this is), but they show up in Slingshot (the launcher). For example, if you open Slingshot and type "Compose Message" you will see an Action of the mail app. Similarly, I would like to open the launcher and type "Disable Redshift" and do it that way.

Hey maandree, thanks for replying! There isn't an abstraction layer. As matzipan pointed out the major desktops are all in agreement that most applications should not use the indicator area. In the case of things like messages, notification centers have this functionality covered now automatically for all apps.

I think redshift is an exception case since it truly shows a status and does not attempt to duplicate other functions that are provided by the system. I think it would be beneficial to users to have a bespoke implementation to take advantage of icons in the -symbolic namespace (our panel icons adapt their color based on the user's wallpaper) and the ability to have other widgets packed (like switches and scales).

Having freedesktop.org actions would be pretty cool indeed in terms of searchability. This is part of the .desktop spec. I'm on mobile right now so I don't have easy access to the link.

Isn't status shown by the actual alteration of the color temperature?

Currently, I suppose this could be handled the same was as redshift-gtk works: It runs the redshift process as a child and uses the output to update the user interface. In the long term I think this could be better handled with D-Bus support in Redshift (#54) but someone needs to finish that project.
