Summary

  • Handle request errors whose port or meaningful code is wrapped inside AggregateError.errors in the balanced-pool weighted round-robin tests.
  • Stop assuming every thrown request error has error.socket.remotePort.
  • Keep the existing expected request ordering and ratio assertions unchanged.

Why

On Windows, recent Node versions can surface localhost connection failures as aggregate errors with nested ECONNREFUSED details. That made the test either throw while reading error.socket.remotePort or fail to count the intended connection-refused event.

Test

  • node --test test\node-test\balanced-pool.js --test-name-pattern "weighted round robin"
  • npx eslint test\node-test\balanced-pool.js
  • git diff --check

AI-assisted contribution: implementation and verification were performed with OpenAI Codex under my direction.

marko1olo force-pushed the fix-balanced-pool-error-classification branch from 88a2e80 to cf18ea0 Compare June 7, 2026 16:14
The weighted round robin cases build their upstreams as
`http://localhost:${port}`. `localhost` resolves to both ::1 and 127.0.0.1, so
when a test server is down the two refusals come back wrapped in the
AggregateError that the happy eyeballs attempt produces. That error carries
neither `port` nor `socket.remotePort` itself - only its causes do - so
`getErrorPort()` returned undefined, `servers.find()` matched nothing and the
case rethrew the original error instead of counting it.

nodejs#5463 already guarded the unguarded `e.socket.remotePort` read that used to
throw `Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'remotePort')` here. That
stopped the TypeError but left the aggregated shape unhandled, turning the
crash into a rethrow. Looking through `err.errors` for the first port finishes
the job. All causes of one of these aggregates report the same port, since they
differ only by address family.

`err.code` needs no equivalent change: Node sets it on the AggregateError as
well as on the causes, so the ECONNREFUSED and UND_ERR_SOCKET branches below
already classify correctly.

The new test pins the behaviour without depending on the timing of a downed
server: nothing listens on port 1, so the refusal is deterministic, and the
assertion fails with `actual: undefined` against the previous helper.

Rebased on main and cut down. This had drifted into conflict, and re-checking it against current main showed most of it was no longer needed.

What changed:

  • Dropped the e.socket.remotePort guard. test: guard balanced-pool error port lookup #5463 landed the equivalent guard on 2 July as getErrorPort(), so there was nothing left to do there.

  • Dropped getRequestErrorCode(). I had assumed the ECONNREFUSED / UND_ERR_SOCKET branches needed the code unwrapped out of the AggregateError. That assumption was wrong — Node sets code on the aggregate as well as on the causes:

    constructor : AggregateError
    e.code : "ECONNREFUSED"

so the existing branches already classify correctly and that helper was dead weight.

  • Kept the port lookup, now recursing into err.errors. This is the part still broken on main. getErrorPort() avoids the crash but returns undefined for an aggregate, because the aggregate carries no port of its own:

    getErrorPort(e) : undefined <- main
    servers.find(...)     : NO MATCH  -> falls through to `throw e`
recursing equivalent : matched server A

So test: guard balanced-pool error port lookup #5463 converted the TypeError into a rethrow rather than making the case pass.

Why an aggregate turns up here at all: the cases build their upstreams as http://localhost:${port}, and localhost resolves to both ::1 and 127.0.0.1. When a test server is down, both families are attempted and the two refusals come back wrapped by the happy eyeballs attempt. That is also why this surfaces on the Windows jobs specifically.

The added test does not depend on a downed server's timing — nothing listens on port 1, so the refusal is deterministic. Against the previous helper it fails with actual: undefined, expected: 1.

Locally node --test test/node-test/balanced-pool.js gives 23/23 and eslint is clean. That is Node 24 on Windows, so I have not reproduced the Node 22 matrix cell that originally went red — the argument for the fix rests on the aggregate shape above, not on my run.

The cache parser now treats empty qualified directives conservatively and safely handles mixed qualified and unqualified directives. Fixed by [4fe5bc5f](nodejs/undici@4fe5bc5) with regression coverage in [9f09b49a](nodejs/undici@9f09b49).

> -----------------
>
> ### High severity
>
> * [GHSA-4cwx-7wf7-3272](GHSA-4cwx-7wf7-3272): malformed qualified `private` Cache-Control directives could cause cross-user information disclosure in shared caches or a parse-time crash. The cache parser now treats empty qualified directives conservatively and safely handles mixed qualified and unqualified directives. Fixed by [4fe5bc5f](nodejs/undici@4fe5bc5) with regression coverage in [9f09b49a](nodejs/undici@9f09b49).
>
> ### Medium severity
>
> * [GHSA-m8rv-5g2x-5cg5](GHSA-m8rv-5g2x-5cg5): a malicious `type` property on a duck-typed blob-like HTTP/1.1 request body could inject CRLF sequences into the generated `content-type` header. Undici now coerces and validates the value before adding it to the request. Fixed by [7d3cf924](nodejs/undici@7d3cf92).
> * [GHSA-jr45-8vmc-qm54](GHSA-jr45-8vmc-qm54): optional whitespace around `=` in qualified `no-cache` and `private` directives could bypass shared-cache restrictions and disclose authenticated data across users. Cache-Control parsing now normalizes these forms and applies conservative cache decisions. Fixed by [c601fff1](nodejs/undici@c601fff).
> * [GHSA-8xcm-r25x-g524](GHSA-8xcm-r25x-g524): the retry interceptor could expose a stale `Content-Length` after resuming a partial response, potentially causing downstream response desynchronization, hangs, or corruption. Undici now rejects partial responses whose `Content-Length` is inconsistent with `Content-Range`. Fixed by [e11a68ed](nodejs/undici@e11a68e), with corrected fixtures in [2b3f7493](nodejs/undici@2b3f749).
> * [GHSA-v3r7-h72x-cjcm](GHSA-v3r7-h72x-cjcm): unsanitized `domain` and `unparsed` values passed to `setCookie()` could inject cookie attributes. Undici now validates cookie domains, paths, and unparsed attributes more strictly. Fixed by [10d93fc3](nodejs/undici@10d93fc).
