Mypy 2.2

We've just uploaded mypy 2.2.0 to the Python Package Index (PyPI). Mypy is a static type checker for Python. This release includes new features, performance improvements and bug fixes. You can install it as follows:

python3 -m pip install -U mypy

You can read the full documentation for this release on Read the Docs.

Support for Closed TypedDicts (PEP 728)

Mypy now supports closed TypedDicts as specified in PEP 728. A closed TypedDict cannot have extra keys beyond those explicitly defined. This allows the type checker to determine that certain operations are safe when they otherwise wouldn't be due to the potential presence of unknown keys.

You can use the closed keyword argument with TypedDict:

HasName = TypedDict("HasName", {"name": str})
HasOnlyName = TypedDict("HasOnlyName", {"name": str}, closed=True)
Movie = TypedDict("Movie", {"name": str, "year": int})
movie: Movie = {"name": "Nimona", "year": 2023}
has_name: HasName = movie # OK: HasName is open (default)
has_only_name: HasOnlyName = movie # Error: HasOnlyName is closed and Movie has extra "year" key
</tr></table>

🤖 Claude Code Review

PR Code Review

Change summary: Single-line dependency bump in pyproject.tomlmypy pinned from 2.3.0 to 2.3.1 in the lint dependency group. This is a routine dependency update (Dependabot-style).

Code Quality

  • Style conventions: Change follows existing formatting conventions in pyproject.toml (pyproject.toml:77). No issues.
  • No commented-out code: N/A, none present.
  • Meaningful variable names: N/A, no code identifiers changed.
  • DRY principle: N/A.
  • Defects: No logic changes, no new code paths. A patch-version mypy bump carries low risk, though patch releases can occasionally introduce new type-checking errors that surface on CI — worth confirming lint/type-check CI passes on this PR.
  • CLAUDE.md review: .claude/CLAUDE.md is unaffected by this diff. Existing content is already environment-agnostic (documents commands, style, supported Python versions) with no local-machine-specific specifics — no concerns.

Testing

  • N/A — no new functions, endpoints, or logic added; this is a lint-tooling version bump only. No tests required.

Documentation

  • CHANGELOG.md not updated — if this repo maintains a CHANGELOG for dependency bumps, it wasn't updated in this diff. Check if the project's convention is to log dependency bumps there (many repos with Dependabot skip this intentionally, so verify against repo convention before treating as blocking).
  • ✅ Everything else N/A (no README/API/inline-comment changes needed for this diff).

Security

  • No hardcoded credentials.
  • No input validation concerns — N/A for this change.
  • No error handling concerns — N/A.
  • No sensitive data in logs — N/A.
  • No .lic files or AQAAAD-prefixed strings present in this diff.

Overall

No blocking issues found. This is a low-risk, mechanical dependency version bump. Only recommendation: confirm CI (lint/type-check job) passes with mypy 2.3.1, and double check whether this repo's convention requires a CHANGELOG entry for dependency bumps.
