This document records the formal review of the FileAssert Cli Context unit implementation, covering requirements, design documentation, source code, and test code.
This review covers the FileAssert-Cli-Context review-set as defined in
.reviewmark.yaml. The scope includes requirements for the Context class,
design documentation describing its structure and behavior, the Context.cs
implementation, and two test files (ContextTests.cs and
ContextNewPropertiesTests.cs). Recent changes added the --depth CLI flag
with Depth property (int, 1–6, default 1), argument parsing, and 6 new
unit tests.
Each check must be recorded with one of the following outcomes:
| Outcome | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pass | The check was performed and the criterion is satisfied |
| Fail | The check was performed and the criterion is not satisfied |
| N/A | The check does not apply; justification is required |

| REQ-03 | All requirements are testable (compliance can be demonstrated by a test) | Pass | Every requirement lists explicit test method names under tests:. |
| REQ-04 | All requirements are consistent (no requirement contradicts another) | Pass | Requirements are complementary; no overlaps or contradictions found. |
| REQ-05 | All requirements are complete (no TBDs, undefined terms, or missing information) | Pass | All requirements are fully specified with justifications and test references. |
| REQ-06 | All requirements are verifiable (can be objectively confirmed as met or not met) | Pass | Each requirement maps to specific tests that can objectively verify it. |
| REQ-07 | No compound requirements are present (each requirement expresses a single testable criterion) | Pass | Each requirement targets a single concern (argument parsing, output, silent mode, etc.). |

|---|---|---|---|
| DES-01 | Design documentation clearly describes the purpose of the component or feature | Pass | The Overview section clearly explains the purpose of Context as the CLI argument parser and I/O owner. |
| DES-02 | Design documentation covers the necessary implementation details | Pass | Class structure, properties table, factory method, output methods, and argument parsing algorithm are all described. |
| DES-03 | Design documentation describes how the code is interfaced (APIs, inputs, outputs) | Pass | The properties table, Create(string[] args) factory method, WriteLine/WriteError methods, and argument parsing behavior are documented. |
| DES-04 | Design documentation describes the expected normal operation | Pass | Normal argument parsing flow, property defaults, and output behavior are covered. |
| DES-05 | Design documentation describes the expected error handling | Pass | Documents that unknown flags and missing values throw ArgumentException, and that WriteError sets a flag rather than throwing. Design Decisions section explains the "Error flag over exception" approach. |

|---|---|---|---|
| CODE-01 | Code conforms to the project coding standards and style guide | Pass | Follows C# conventions, uses XML doc comments, proper access modifiers, consistent formatting. |
| CODE-02 | No obvious resource leaks are present (file handles, connections, memory) | Pass | Context implements IDisposable, disposes _logWriter properly. Tests use using declarations for disposal. |
| CODE-03 | No hardcoded values are present that should be configurable | Pass | Default values (.fileassert.yaml, depth=1) are intentional and documented in requirements. The depth range 1–6 matches Markdown heading levels. |
| CODE-04 | Each unit or function has a single, well-defined responsibility | Pass | Context owns argument state and I/O. ArgumentParser is a dedicated nested class for parsing. Create is a factory method. WriteLine/WriteError handle output. |
| CODE-05 | Code is written at the appropriate level of abstraction | Pass | Clean separation between parsing (ArgumentParser), state (Context properties), and I/O (WriteLine/WriteError). |
| CODE-06 | Code has an appropriate amount of extensibility for its context | Pass | Sealed class is appropriate per design decision. Factory method pattern allows future parser changes without breaking the public API. |

|---|---|---|---|
| LOGIC-01 | Code does only what is intended (no unintended side effects or behaviors) | Pass | Methods perform their documented purpose. No hidden state mutations or side effects. |
| LOGIC-02 | All significant inputs and boundary conditions are handled correctly | Pass | Depth validates 1–6 range (rejects 0, 7, non-numeric). Missing values for --log, --results, --config, --depth throw. Unknown flags throw. |
| LOGIC-03 | Concurrency and threading concerns are identified and addressed | N/A | Context is designed for single-threaded CLI use; no concurrent access patterns are expected. |

|---|---|---|---|
| ERR-01 | Error handling follows the approach described in the design documentation | Pass | ArgumentException for invalid args, InvalidOperationException wrapping file-system errors for log file, WriteError sets flag—all match design. |
| ERR-02 | The logging volume and level of detail are appropriate | Pass | Log file captures all WriteLine and WriteError output; no excessive or missing logging. |
| ERR-03 | Error messages are user-friendly and actionable | Pass | Messages include the flag name and what's required (e.g., "--depth requires an integer between 1 and 6", "--log requires a filename argument"). |
| ERR-04 | Error messages and log entries do not leak sensitive data | Pass | Messages reference only CLI arguments and flag names. No credentials, paths to sensitive data, or internal state exposed. |

|---|---|---|---|
| USE-01 | The feature or API is easy to use correctly | Pass | Standard CLI flag conventions (--flag value), sensible defaults, clear error messages on misuse. |
| USE-02 | All public APIs are well documented | Pass | All public properties and methods have XML doc comments. The design document provides a complete API reference table. |

| TEST-03 | Tests are independent and repeatable (no shared mutable state, no ordering dependency) | Pass | Each test creates its own Context instance, uses temp files with cleanup in finally blocks, and restores Console streams. |
| TEST-04 | Test names clearly describe the behavior being verified | Pass | Names follow Context_Create_<Condition>_<ExpectedResult> convention consistently (e.g., Context_Create_DepthFlag_AboveSix_ThrowsArgumentException). |
| TEST-05 | New test cases are added for new functionality or defect fixes | Pass | 6 new tests added for --depth: DepthFlag_SetsDepth, NoArguments_DepthDefaultsToOne, DepthFlag_WithoutValue_ThrowsArgumentException, DepthFlag_NonNumeric_ThrowsArgumentException, DepthFlag_Zero_ThrowsArgumentException, DepthFlag_AboveSix_ThrowsArgumentException. All 46 Context tests pass on net8.0, net9.0, and net10.0. |

|---|---|---|---|
| SEC-01 | No obvious security vulnerabilities are present (e.g., injection flaws, hardcoded credentials) | Pass | No shell execution, no SQL, no credential handling. File paths are passed through to standard .NET APIs. |
| SEC-02 | Authentication and authorization are handled correctly (see design documentation) | N/A | This is a local CLI tool; no authentication or authorization applies. |
| SEC-03 | Sensitive data is stored and transmitted securely | N/A | No sensitive data is handled by the Context class. |

| READ-05 | Flow of control can be easily followed | Pass | Linear argument parsing loop, clear switch cases, straightforward factory method. |
| READ-06 | Data flow is understandable | Pass | Arguments flow through ArgumentParser → properties transferred to Context via object initializer → exposed as read-only properties. |
| READ-07 | Comments are provided where the code is non-obvious | Pass | The generic catch block in OpenLogFile has a comment explaining why it's acceptable. The AutoFlush setting is explained. |
| READ-08 | No debug artifacts or commented-out code have been left in the codebase | Pass | No TODO comments, debug prints, or commented-out code found. |

No checks were recorded as Fail.
Observations (informational, not failures):
| # | Observation | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| OBS-01 | Test Context_Create_ResultAliasFlag_SetsResultsFile not listed in requirements |
The test for the --result alias (line 170–178 in ContextTests.cs) verifies the alias behavior but is not listed in any requirement's tests: field. This is a minor traceability gap—the test is valid and useful, but is not formally traced to a requirement. Consider adding it to FileAssert-Context-ArgumentParsing tests list. |
| OBS-02 | Negative depth value not explicitly tested | While int.TryParse + range check < 1 covers negative values, there is no explicit test for --depth -1. The existing --depth 0 boundary test suffices for range validation, but an explicit negative test would strengthen boundary coverage. |
Overall Outcome: Pass
All 47 applicable checklist items pass. The requirements are well-structured and
complete, the design documentation accurately describes the implementation, the
code is clean and well-organized, and the tests provide thorough coverage of all
requirements including the new --depth feature. All 46 Context-related tests
pass on net8.0, net9.0, and net10.0 target frameworks.
